Best moment by far I’ve had with my class this year? Our Valentine’s Day dance at school. My kids LOVED it (well except for the one who choked another student, but he was removed promptly) and they all danced…and were a blast to dance with it. Plus I got to rock out to the jams too. Sure the tracks were old and I’ll say stale (I’m trying not to say lame…cause you never know who reads these things). Also my school has used the SAME CD for dances since probably the invention of the CD and CD player. Now I happen to be on the committee that is in charge of said dances, and so when asked today if I wanted to make a NEW CD for our upcoming St. Patrick’s Day dance, my response was absolutely. Oh, if only my fellow committee members realized what they just did.
I only need about a 45 minute CD…but so far my playlist is well over 2 hours. Will need to cut that down. More troubling is the amount of internet scouring I am doing trying to somehow find a super clean version of Lonely Island’s “I’m on a boat” where you can’t tell they sing/rap "motherf*cker” like 400 times. Work in progress. I’m also trying to figure out some Eminem song that is 1) Danceable too 2) not blatantly about drugs or obscene 3) and has a clean version that won’t get me fired. Might not exist. I mean how awesome would it be if I could pull off Eminem?? Ahh, I’ve also got an awesome mash-up of Dr. Dre and Snoop over the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams”…it’s edited…but for a couple of the verses it is blatantly saying n*gger even with the slight pause. I am doubting I can run it. And of course I’m debating M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” which is one of my absolute favorite songs to dance too…but unfortunately has gunshots for a chorus line…and is about drugs. Also I’m coming to the realization I might be fired by next Friday.
There is also pressure on me for this to be a good dance now. If not, our poor kids are going to be stuck with the same ol’ CD for potentially ever.
This is the first thing entrusted to me since since I got to pick one of our VSA movies in December and tried to run with something a little different and new, “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” I got a lot of atta boys for it after it played and most staff and the students seemed to like it…but you can sure tell that the majority of the staff population is female when I got a few comments back like these, “Oh I liked it Lee, but I did hear some complaints from other staff about how a few of the characters were smoking” or “It was a really good movie, but I know some other people were talking about how the characters said ‘what the cuss’ (in place of what the f*ck) a lot. At least for the dance I am expecting some people to not like my music. Bitch away.
